What to Expect and How to Prepare for Your In Home Newborn Session
Why I Love In Home Newborn Sessions
In home newborn sessions truly have my heart. There is something so special about capturing your brand new family member in the comfort of your own home, surrounded by parents, siblings, and even pets. These first few weeks go by in a blur, and babies change so quickly during this time. Being able to document those early days in a familiar and meaningful space allows your photos to feel personal, relaxed, and timeless. Your home tells part of your story, and that is exactly what lifestyle newborn photography is all about.
Best Time of Day for Your Session
The best time for an in home newborn session is during daylight hours, typically in the morning. Starting your session between 9:00 AM and 1:00 PM usually gives us the most beautiful natural light and a happier, more settled baby. I understand that this time frame is not always possible, especially with older siblings or family schedules, and I am always happy to work with what makes the most sense for your family and your baby.
Natural Light and Your Home
I absolutely love natural light and rely on it heavily during lifestyle sessions. We will embrace the light already present in your home by opening blinds, turning off overhead lights, and positioning you near windows whenever possible. Even on cloudy or rainy days, you might be surprised by how much soft and flattering light comes through your windows. This natural brightness helps create airy and authentic images that feel warm and true to life.
If Your Home Has Limited Light
If your home does not receive much natural light, I will use a flash at a very low power and bounce it off the ceiling. This simply adds enough light to keep everything looking natural and cohesive without harsh shadows or an overly bright look.
Feeding Baby Before the Session
I recommend feeding your baby shortly before your session begins. A full belly usually means a more content and cooperative baby. If you would like feeding or nursing photos included, we can absolutely capture those at the start of the session. In that case, just wait to feed baby until I arrive so we can document that sweet connection first.
Keep Things Cozy
A warm home makes a big difference. Babies are happiest when they are cozy, especially if we are capturing diaper or swaddled photos. Turning up the heat before your session helps keep baby comfortable during outfit changes and allows the session to flow more smoothly.
What to Wear
What you wear is completely up to you. I always suggest moms choose their outfit first and then build everyone else’s looks around it. Comfortable and flowy pieces are encouraged so you can move easily and feel confident during your session. Neutral and earthy tones photograph beautifully and keep the focus on connection rather than clothing.
Props and Personal Touches
Because lifestyle sessions are very candid and documentary in nature, any props you would like to include are entirely optional. You are welcome to incorporate personal items such as swaddles, hats, baskets, blankets, headbands, or special outfits for your baby. Outfit and blanket changes are always okay, and I love capturing a variety of looks that feel meaningful to your family.
What Your Gallery Will Look Like
Lifestyle newborn sessions focus heavily on candid moments, real interactions, quiet snuggles, and genuine emotions. While I will gently guide you when needed, much of the session is about documenting your new rhythm at home. These images tell a story and preserve this season just as it is.
When to Schedule Your Newborn Session
I recommend scheduling your newborn session as soon as you feel comfortable after birth. Generally, the earlier the session takes place, the smoother it tends to be. Younger babies are typically sleepier and more relaxed, which allows for easier transitions. As babies get older, things like baby acne or scratches can appear. Ideally, sessions take place within the first two weeks after birth, though your comfort always comes first.
Session Length
Newborn lifestyle sessions typically last between 60 and 90 minutes. I know how precious those early weeks can be, so I aim to work efficiently while still providing a beautiful variety of images. If you have specific shots in mind, sharing a short list ahead of time is always helpful. You are also welcome to send additional ideas before your session.
Gallery Delivery
I know how excited you are to see your photos, especially with a new baby. Your full gallery will be delivered via email within one week of your session. Sneak peeks may be shared on social media the same day if requested.
Final Thoughts
I cannot wait to document your in home newborn session and capture beautiful memories of your sweet baby. These moments are fleeting, and it is truly an honor to preserve them for your family.

My baby is so fussy. I am afraid she will cry the entire time you are here.
This is one of the biggest benefits of in home newborn sessions. We can pause at any time. There is no rush and no pressure. You will have all the time you need to feed, soothe, and recompose. Babies cry, and that is completely normal. This season is real life, and your session is designed to work around your baby, not against them.
My son or daughter is afraid of the baby or wants nothing to do with them.
This is more common than you might think, and it is absolutely okay. A new baby is a big adjustment for siblings. I never force or pressure children to participate if they are not comfortable. Sometimes a simple game or gentle prompt helps, and sometimes it does not. Either way, we follow their lead. The goal is to create a calm and positive experience, never to force a moment that does not feel natural.
My house is not Pinterest perfect.
Mine is not either, and it definitely was not when my kids were little. In home newborn sessions are not about perfection. They are about connection, emotion, and storytelling. All I truly need is one space with decent natural light, and I can create beautiful and meaningful images from there.
I live in a one bedroom apartment with limited light, and we do not even have a crib.
Some of my favorite sessions have taken place in small spaces. A crib is not required to tell the story of your newborn. We can use couches, beds, windows, or even the floor. With thoughtful angles and light, your space is more than enough.
Do you use or bring props?
I do not bring props. As a lifestyle photographer, I believe less is more. My focus is on capturing your family organically and authentically. You are welcome to include personal items such as swaddles, blankets, or outfits that are meaningful to you, but nothing is required.
We feel awkward in front of the camera. Will you help pose us?
Yes, absolutely. Feeling awkward is completely normal, and you are not alone. I will gently guide you into natural positions and then encourage interaction so your images feel relaxed and genuine. You do not need to know what to do. That is my job.
